a hand drawing and watercolor image of Morel mushroom.
Artwork by Nona Estrin

Had enough rain? I wish I could ask this question of the morels now popping up in various grassy edges and rich woods around the area. Or rather, ask the fungal networks (mycelium) that produce this magnificent “fruiting,” spore-producing body, the mushroom. I know from experience they need a damp spring and soil warm-up, but not too much rain. But most of all they need the soil, which is perhaps being drastically altered by our most recent invasion, the jumping worm!
