MONTPELIER — The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Vermont Chapter invites the community to join the Central Vermont Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Statehouse lawn in Montpelier. Check-in begins at 9 a.m., and the program begins at 10 a.m.
The Out of the Darkness Walk brings together suicide loss survivors, people with lived experience, families, friends, mental health advocates, volunteers, and community partners to honor loved ones, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and advance suicide prevention across Vermont. Michelle Kelaher, the 2026 Walk Chair and a Waitsfield resident, explained what the event means to the community: “The OOTD Walk is a powerful gathering where individuals unite to honor their struggles, pay tribute to lost loved ones, and advocate for mental health awareness. This event creates a space for connection and healing, reminding us of our collective strength when we come together. Join us to help reduce stigma, support mental health and shine a light on the darkness! You are not alone.”
Funds raised through the Central Vermont Out of the Darkness Walk support AFSP’s lifesaving research, advocacy, survivor support, and educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities across Vermont. AFSP Vermont provided more than 41 suicide prevention and postvention programs statewide last year, helping Vermonters recognize warning signs, reduce stigma, have supportive conversations, and connect people to help.
“Every person who takes part helps turn awareness into meaningful action,” said Sally Hespe, Vermont Area Director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “The funds raised here in Central Vermont expand education, strengthen support for those affected by suicide, and give more people the tools to recognize when someone may need help. This walk is one way our community can make prevention visible and lasting.”
The walk is a non-competitive community event open to all, and there is no fee to attend. The program includes an opening ceremony, activities of hope and healing, resource tables, and complimentary honor beads for participants. Local businesses, organizations, faith communities, schools, and civic groups are also invited to sponsor the walk or form teams.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.
