MONTPELIER — Friends of the Winooski River hosted its 28th annual Montpelier River Cleanup on Sept. 12. Volunteers met in front of city hall to share coffee and donuts donated by Capitol Grounds and Dunkin Donuts before heading to one of three cleanup sites: Montpelier High School, Elm Street, and the former rk MILES building supply site. From there, volunteers towed canoes through the rivers collecting trash ranging from toys to tires to electronics and small furniture. The city of Montpelier picked up the trash, including dozens of tires, from each cleanup site on Sept. 14

Kate Stephenson of Montpelier said she has been volunteering for over a decade and looks forward to returning each year.

“It’s so satisfying to clean up trash, and you usually always find unique treasures, too. It’s muddy and exhausting but you feel great after,” she said.
