MONTPELIER — The Montpelier Department of Public Works has released final road paving plans for this summer. The city will be spending nearly $1.2 million, a significant increase from recent years and a level that the department says is needed to keep roads in a “steady state” condition.
The following roads will be completely reconstructed, including removal of existing pavement and part of the underlying gravel base: Crescent Lane, Robinhood Circle, Parkside Drive (last 200 feet), Arsenal Street, and Walker Terrace.
The following roads are scheduled for milling and resurfacing and in some cases other work, such as curb resetting and sidewalk improvements: Center Street, Charles Street, Colonial Drive, Edwards Street, Elm Street, Forest Drive, Foster Street, Hillcrest Avenue, Kemp Avenue, Longmeadow Drive, Sabin Street, Summit Street, Tracy Street, and Woodrow Avenue.
Major paving projects tentatively on the horizon include $599,587 for repaving Berlin Street in 2027; $588,705 for repaving North Street in 2028, and $840,594 for repaving Terrace Street in 2029.
It appears the reconstruction of East State Street is unlikely to start until late this year or next year. The $8 million project, which includes replacing water and sewer pipes, is not being paid for through the regular city budget, but instead by a 2022 city bond and federal grant. Grant procedures and a survey dispute have delayed the project.
