Capital City Concerts concludes its 26th season with “Fauré Foray,” a special program that also marks a fond farewell to founder and flutist Karen Kevra, on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier. Incoming artistic directors Jillian Reed, flutist, and Tyler Emerson, pianist, will join in the performance and continue the legacy of CCC.
Violinist Laurie Smukler, violist Tal First, cellist Natasha Brofsky, and pianist Qing Jiang will be joining Kevra along with Reed and Emerson.
The program includes Fauré’s Piano Quartet in C minor, Violin Sonata No. 1, and Fantaisie for flute and piano, featuring flutist Karen Kevra. The concert opens with the Sicilienne from Fauré’s suite “Pelléas et Mélisande” arranged for two flutes and piano in which Reed and Emerson will perform with Kevra.
The evening also celebrates Kevra’s remarkable legacy: 26 seasons, hundreds of concerts, and many memorable outreach programs that has brought world-class artists to Montpelier, including the Paris Piano Trio; the Borromeo and Talich quartets; pianists Jeffrey Chappell, Robert McDonald, Jeewon Park, and Jean-Claude Pennetier; cellists Edward Arron, Roland Pidoux, and Joel Krosnick; and violinist Eugene Drucker of the Emerson Quartet.
The concert will end in a reception celebrating Kevra’s outstanding tenure, the legacy of renowned flutist Louis Moyse, and the new chapter of CCC leadership under Reed and Emerson. Reed was raised in Montpelier and taught by Karen Kevra before embarking on her career in music. Reed and Emerson met as young musicians in Vermont and continue as partners in life and artistry, performing throughout the northeast. They will be building upon the legacy of CCC as a Montpelier community organization informed by the unifying power of music.
