Northfield is often regarded by many Vermonters as a military town. In addition to the presence of Norwich University, the town is also home to the Veterans’ Place, a quasi-military organization dedicated to serving male unhoused veterans. Established in 2009, Veterans’ Place provides wrap-around supports and services to those who have served in the armed forces.
The Veterans’ Place offers a wide range of benefits to qualified veterans, including private rooms, meals, clothing, transportation, and access to medical and mental care. This 18-bed home is a Grant-per-Diem program considered to be transitional housing. It is designed to help veterans overcome barriers that prevent them from securing independent, affordable housing.
Executive Director Bonnie Pollard-Allen leads a support staff of six, which includes a case manager, cook, administrative personnel, maintenance staff, and a housing coordinator who assists veterans in finding and securing a new residence. The team also features a veteran peer support member who served in the infantry during the Iraq war and has personally experienced post traumatic stress disorder and homelessness. The organization’s peer support meets with residents weekly to address any issues the veterans may be experiencing during their residency.
Transitioning to Independent Living
When a veteran is ready to move forward to independent living, the Veterans’ Place provides basic household furnishings. These items — such as dishes and cookware — along with donations from volunteers and the public help veterans establish their new homes.
On average, the program serves 33 veterans each year and boasts a success rate of 87%. This means that 87% of those who move to independent living remain housed for at least a year, with the hope that they will continue to thrive independently for the rest of their lives. The annual cost of operating the Veterans’ Place is nearly $600,000. While the VA provides some funding, the staff, board members, and volunteers must raise approximately $200,000 through grants and fundraising efforts to cover the full cost of the program.
