The lot at the southwest corner of Montpelier’s Main and School streets held the Union House hotel from 1859 until it burned in 1930. Ed Seguin, who owned the block next door on Main Street, built a gas station situated diagonally on the lot in 1931. In 1978 the Howard Bank demolished the gas station and built a small brick-and-concrete drive-through bank building on the edges of the lot. This summer the current owners of the building, TD Bank, changed the 1970s look of the building by painting the red brick light gray, the raw concrete black, and the entire sign band bright green, consistent with their corporate branding if not the appearance of downtown Montpelier.
