It is important to be aware of changes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made in eligibility for getting the shots.

Eligibility
The 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine is currently approved by the FDA for adults 65 and older, in addition to adults and children with an underlying health condition.
Other groups may also be recommended to get a COVID-19 vaccine by professional medical groups and societies, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American College of Family Physicians.
Vaccine Availability
For people in the categories that have received FDA approval, some pharmacies are booking appointments now, and health care providers will have doses soon.
Some pharmacies may ask you to confirm that you have an underlying health condition, or some may require a prescription from a health care provider. Check with your pharmacy.
Pharmacists in Vermont can give COVID-19 vaccines to children age 5 and older, although policies may vary by location.
Insurance Coverage
Most health insurance plans in Vermont are expected to continue to cover COVID-19 shots through at least the end of the year. If you’re unsure, check with your insurance provider.
A survey of local pharmacy appointment calendars shows that appointments are in demand. Availability is generally a week out, and options during that week are filling quickly. If you are not in the FDA-approved categories listed above, it will be important to contact your primary care physician about a prescription, especially if your work or living situation involves close contact with people in the higher-risk categories.
