Paul CarnahanHidden within Montpelier’s older residential neighborhoods are some interesting buildings. Take, for example, the unassuming red apartment building at 37–39 St. Paul Street. This building was one of Montpelier’s early schools. On the 1858 Wallings map, it is located at the corner of St. Paul and Liberty streets, set back on the lot where 9 Liberty is today. It was captured in this location by a photographer sometime about 1880. Between 1905 and 1909 it was turned 90 degrees to face St. Paul Street. Although the cupola in the 1880 photograph is now gone, the triangular louver in the left gable is still present.
