Heather KoontzObserved on June 19, Juneteenth is an annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. To help honor the holiday, the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir is holding a concert series led by its new artistic director, Dr. James Stewart.
June 5: A Capella Concert: “I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired.” 7 p.m. The Old Meeting House, 1620 Center Road, East Montpelier. An evening of traditional spirituals, old favorites, and new classics, celebrating the rich history and artistry of gospel music, and honoring Juneteenth. Free and open to the public; suggested donation $15. Reserve your seats.
June 13: Mass Choir: “I’m Gonna Sing.” 7:30 to 9 p.m. Unitarian Church of Montpelier, 130 Main Street. Classic selections by the a capella ensemble followed by an exciting performance of African drumming by guest artists Shidaa Project. The large choir will then share high-energy gospel music featuring songs by Hezekiah Walker and Kirk Franklin, along with new arrangements of old favorites. Tickets are $20 each ($15 for children) or a $60 family rate.
June 14: Mass Choir and Silent Auction. Also featuring Shidaa Projects, the choir begins at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, and a silent auction will follow at 6 p.m. to support racial and social justice organizations in central Vermont as well as help fund the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir’s concert series. In addition to auction items, there will be a 50/50 raffle and snacks for attendees. Those only attending the auction do not need a ticket.
