Vote ‘Yes’ for Career Center Building
To the Editor:
I would like to voice my support and encourage others to support the proposed expansion of the Central Vermont Career Center. This is an incredible program that for years has served students very well and now has the opportunity to expand and offer services to more students in central Vermont. This seems like a no-brainer.
It should not be news to anyone that Vermont has one of the oldest populations in the country. This means that many of our electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and mechanics are aging out and retiring. What does this mean for the people who have the privilege to own their own home and need to hire someone in the trades to fix a leaking sink or replace the tube-and-knob wiring that we know haunts many houses around here? Or what about when our car breaks down and we need a mechanic? It’s going to be harder to find people to do those jobs.
If we vote ‘yes’ in November to support the Career Center expansion we are investing in the future of Vermont but also investing into the future of our kids. College doesn’t make sense for everyone and for those for whom it does not, many of them want to get into a trades program, but there’s limited space.
The Career Center changes lives. So why not give them this opportunity? Not only will it benefit them, it will benefit all of us when we can hire a neighbor to come and rebuild our porch or install a heat pump. The career center also provides a medical program leading to the education of more nurses, something we desperately need. I urge you to join me in voting ‘yes.’
