Join the “Cash Mob” to Support Struggling State Street Businesses

May 14, 2025

In a show of solidarity and support, local Montpelier businesses with the support of Montpelier Alive are organizing a community-wide “Cash Mob” on Saturday, May 17, and Saturday, May 31, aimed at helping businesses on the south side of State Street affected by the ongoing construction.

Local shops and restaurants along State Street have been struggling for weeks with the disruption brought on by the construction project, including noise, limited visibility, traffic flow changes, torn-up sidewalks, and limited parking. The result has been a significant drop in foot traffic. At least one business has already announced its closure.

The upcoming “Cash Mob” invites neighbors, friends, and customers who care about Montpelier’s downtown to come out and shop at the stores and eat at the restaurants on the south side of State Street. Organizers are asking participants to bring cash, reusable totes, and a sense of community spirit as they spend what they can in support of these local businesses.

“Whether it’s $5 or $50, every purchase sends a message that we care and that our downtown matters,” says Katie Trautz, executive director of Montpelier Alive. “These two days of focused support can provide a much-needed influx of cash to our businesses that are struggling the most and shine a light on the challenges they are facing.”
