Local Church Forms Climate Resilience Study Group
A year and a half after the church suffered significant damage to its historic building in the flood of July 2023, the Unitarian Church of Montpelier is launching a 13-member Climate Resilience Study Group to research five options for climate-resilient facilities for the congregation’s long-term future.
The five options the study group will research range from simply repairing any future damage to raising the building to moving church functions to another site.
The Rev. Joan Javier-Duval, UCM’s minister, has served the congregation since August of 2015. She said, “This congregation has served a vital purpose in the community for 160 years. We must now prepare for the future with courageous acceptance of continued climate instability and a spirited commitment to carry on our congregation’s mission and presence as a spiritual community of love and service for future generations.”
